Airings

18 new people came to Jaywick for Airings in April 2026; supported by Sarah Cole, Mia Taylor and Anna Hart.

This week-long residency involved 6 MA Art & Science, 10 BAFA students and 2 Studio Managers (CSM alumni) living in caravans and working together to develop individual and collective ideas. We also met with Dr Karen Denis, whose exhibition in Jaywick Martello Tower showcased her career of working with sustainable fashion and community engagement. Local artist Jane Stewart delivered two workshops on crafting painting tools from foraged materials and making bio-material netting with natural products and kitchen implements. CSM technician Vince Hart demonstrated how to make paint pigment from local clay and stones and worked with Alex Schady to create a 'bling' event for the public.

Our Jaywick friends made us extremely welcome; we joined a DNA Dance with Dementia class at Sunspot and sang along with Jaywick Sands Singers at their weekly rehearsal in St Christopher's Church. Students also ran workshops with local people, at JMT and Inclusion Ventures, exploring ways to make zines, fly kites, design medals and articulate scent.
